Elimelech, his wife and two sons left Judah and went to Moab during a
famine. Elimelech and both sons, who had taken Moabite wives, died. Naomi
said to her daughters-in-law, “Go, return to your mother’s house.” Orpah
left, but Ruth would not leave. Naomi returned to Judah filled with
bitterness because of the calamity she had endured and Ruth, her Moabite
daughter-in-law, went with her.
